Mario Kiesenhofer's exhibition in Vienna

In April 2020, we intended to exhibit new works by Mario Kiesenhofer at our gallery space in New York City. However, due to the pandemic, we have had to reschedule this exhibition, and now hope to be able to show this work in 2022.

In the interim, Kiesenhofer has been busy in Europe, particularly in Vienna, where he resides, and online.

His latest solo exhibition, “Shifting Layers” was shown at Bildraum 01 in Vienna, 10 June – 8 July 2021.
Lisa Ortner-Kreil, of Kunstforum Vienna, spoke at the opening, and Kiesenhofer also gave an artist’s talk, in conversation with Claudia Slanar, of the Belvedere.

The exhibition was covered in the online magazine Les Nouveaux Riches and also featured in the Austria-wide daily newspaper "Der Standard.”

In the context of this exhibition Kiesenhofer presented a new video work entitled "Fragments".

Bildraum 01 turns into a place for queer discourse. Kiesenhofer maps surfaces and addresses the social spaces and landscapes used for intimate encounters and sexual interactions by the gay community. Landscape elements not only take on the function of a safe space, but also define a zone of danger. Kiesenhofer's focus is on the state of tension that prevails at these queer beaches and peripheral places of encounter. Closeness and distance, visibility and camouflage as well as danger and safety are constantly renegotiated.
