Allison Plass

Peter Hay Halpert Fine Art is pleased to announce its representation of the California-born, NYC-based artist Allison Plass, whose work explores issues of masculinity and representation.

Plass received her MA in Art History at UC Santa Barbara where she explored issues of gender in European Art. She completed the Advanced Track Program at the International Center of Photography in New York in 2020. Her photographic practice is influenced by art history, the natural world, and the intersection of cultural myths and stories we carry about our own lives. She has been featured in solo, group, and juried exhibitions in the US, Europe, and Asia. Her work has appeared in The Guardian, as the 2023 First Prize winner in the KLPA Portrait Awards, and she is a 2023 LensCulture Portrait Award finalist. She is the recipient of the 2024 Salon Jane Award for Women in Photography.

Boys in the Garden, is an ongoing series initiated in 2021, exploring the presence of her two sons and husband in an imaginary garden. It echoes her earlier project Hold Me Tight, (2017-21), which examined moments of vulnerability and intimacy between her two teenage sons and her partner.

Plass notes: “Inspired by Western art, psychology, and myth, I explore the question of whether there is an inherently masculine experience…I discover an epic love story between fathers, sons, and brothers which feels like unexplored territory.”

“Allison’s work expands Peter Hay Halpert Fine Art’s exploration of figurative photography. Her photography extends the lineage of women artists we have exhibited in our program—including Ranee Palone Flynn, Martine Fougeron, and Suzanne Opton – making this collaboration a strong fit. At the same time, her pictures also suggest a kinship with Sally Mann, and Duane Michals. We are thrilled to have the opportunity to present her work this summer!”
