Where do you come from?
I was born in Siberia in a big Industrial city called Kemerovo - The Detroit of Russia. As a teenager I came to Moscow where I began my career as a journalist. By the age or 21 I became a national celebrity because of my outrageous gay writing and because of my attempt to register officially the first same-sex marriage in Russia. For those very reasons I was kicked out of Russia and was granted political asylum in the states. I was the last dissident from the fomer Soviet Union and the first dissident ever who did porn. I published 7 books of poetry, fiction and journalism and starred in 3 porn flickes, including Bruce LaBruce's Skin Flick, produced by Cazzo. Recently Cazzo approached me to direct my own movie, the working title for which is "Champagne and Caviar" It's gonna be the kinkiest movie ever!
Tell us the best memory of your life?
Living in the jungle of Costa Rica for 2 weeks with no telephone, internet, television, or hot water and taking showers under the tropical rain. Experiences like that help you to realise the irrelevance of the material values of Western civilization and the meaninglessness of everyday routine of our hyper-capitalist consumerist existence.
Can you tell us about your influences...?
To name just a few (starting with your genius Frenchmen): Arthur Rimbaud, Jean Genet, Pierre Klossowski, Pierre Molinier, Vladimir Mayakovsky, David Wojnarowicz - People who transcended the boundaries and conventions of any particular genre and lived their lives as art and vice versa. Also as a teenager I was toatally obsessed with Yuri Gagarin, the world's first space traveler, I was born on April 12, the Soviet Space Day, and considered him as my Cosmic Patron, or Godfather.
...And your last wet and creamy dream?
My wet dream is to play a serial killer in Francois Ozon movie, raping and butchering all the cutest boys I meet on my way.
What is your conception of desire?
All my photos are about desire. For me, it's more exciting to photograph someone than to fuck him. I'm a voyeur, a retired exhibitionist. I like photographing people in intimate, vulnerable situations, like a guy sniffing another guy's underarm, or German skinheads pissing and spitting on each other. I look for a primal beauty and innocence in the most unconventional and graphic scenes and situations that would normally be considered "obscene," "shocking," or "perverse"
Can you tell us about your next projects?
I have a few shows coming up in LA, NY, Berlin, Stockholm, and Leon (Spain).
